The history of the zoo

Founded in 1884, Los Angeles was intended to be the West Coast equivalent of a traditional zoo.

With these goals and high aspirations for Los-Angeles’s future as one of America’s premier natural habitats, John C. Austin became the first director of this new Los Angeles Zoo on January 21st, 1901. The goal: provide visitors with an opportunity to see animals from distant climes without leaving home soil!

The current Los Angeles Zoo is now comprised of different buildings that house over 2000 total animals representing more than 450 unique species – all sheltered on 45 acres in Griffith Park at 3900 North Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles California 90027 United States

In addition to its historic enclosures (such as Elephant Jungle), there are other new additions which are just as impressive.
